The Gates Cambridge Scholarship is one of the most competitive and prestigious international scholarships available to outstanding applicants from countries outside the UK. It provides full-cost scholarships for graduate study and research at the University of Cambridge.
Eligibility Criteria
To be considered for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship 2024/25, applicants must meet the following requirements:
Citizenship:
- Must be a citizen of any country outside the United Kingdom.
Course of Study:
- Be applying for one of the following courses at University of Cambridge:
- PhD: full-time or part-time.
- MLitt: full-time.
- One-year postgraduate course: full-time (with some exceptions).
Current Students:
Students already studying at the University of Cambridge can apply if they want to pursue a new postgraduate programme at the University.
Scholarship Benefits
The scholarship benefits provided by the Gates Cambridge Scholarship programme for study in the UK are as follows:
- University Composition Fee:
- It covers the full cost of tuition at the appropriate rate for the chosen course.
Maintenance Allowance:
- Provides maintenance allowance for a single student, set at £20,000 for 12 months at the 2023-24 rate. This is pro-rated for courses shorter than 12 months.
- For PhD scholars, this amount is made available for a maximum duration of 4 years.
Airfare:
Covers one economy single airfare to Cambridge at the start of the course and one economy single airfare back to the student’s home country at the end of the course.
Visa Costs and Immigration Health Surcharge:
- Covers the cost of an inbound visa.
- Pays for the Immigration Health Surcharge, so this is the charge required for overseas

Required Documents:
In an application for the Gates Cambridge Scholarship, you will be asked to provide the following:
1. Personal Statement:
You will be asked in an application form: “In no more than 3000 characters (approximately 500 words), please explain why you are applying for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship and how you meet the four main criteria.”
What Criteria to Address:
- Academic Excellence: How good has your academic performance been?.
- Course Choice: Describe why you have chosen your particular Cambridge course.
- Going to Make a Difference: Outline your passion for improving the lives of others.
- Leadership Potential: Give examples of your potential and ability as a leader.

2. Research Proposal (PhD Applicants Only):
Content: This should be a detailed description of the research to be undertaken, which will comprise your proposed research project.
Purpose: This proposal will help the assessors gauge the viability and importance of your research and your capability to pursue it.
Submission: You should submit this as a part of your application for funding.
3. Gates Cambridge Reference:
Requirements: In addition to the two academic references required for admission to the University of Cambridge, applicants for the Gates Cambridge Scholarship must submit a third reference.
This recommendation letter will have to be about your suitability for the Gates Cambridge Scholarship itself, in which you make a case on all four major criteria: academic excellence, the reasons for choosing this course, commitment to improving the lives of others, and leadership capacity.
Source: This letter of recommendation should come from someone who knows you best in terms of your qualification and character. It could be your mentor, immediate supervisor, or whoever else who is better placed to recommend you comprehensively yet positively.

Get to the Graduate Application Portal:
- Log in to the University of Cambridge Graduate Application Portal.
Open an Account:
If you have not already done so, create an account now, and then start your application.
Complete the Admission Section of the online form:
Apply for Course: State the graduate course to which you are applying
College Preference: You will be asked whether you wish to apply for a College place within the University of Cambridge
Personal Details: Provide your personal details, including your contact addresses.
Complete the Funding Section:
Apply for funding: This tab will allow you to submit applications for the various funding opportunities offered by the University and related bodies.
Submit Your Application:
Make sure that the form is complete in all respects, and there are no errors or omissions.
