Criteria for Eligibility
Nationality: Primarily open to non-EEA/EFTA students, though students of any nationality enrolling in specific advanced programs (e.g., LLM Advanced Studies or MSc in International Relations and Diplomacy) can also apply.
Academic Performance: Applicants must demonstrate outstanding academic performance, typically being among the top 10% of their previous study program.
Previous Education: Must have excellent study results in previous relevant education.
Scholarship Benefits
The LExS offers three types of financial support:
- €10,000 towards the tuition fee
- €15,000 towards the tuition fee
- Total tuition fee minus the statutory tuition fee
The number and type of awards depend on the budget available for each faculty department. Application Process
- Admission Application: Apply online for admission to a master’s program at Leiden University.
- LExS Application: Indicate your intention to apply for the LExS in your online application. Submit a strong motivation letter (max. 500 words) explaining why you should be considered for the scholarship.
- Deadlines:
- For programs starting in September 2024: February 1, 2024.
- For LLM Advanced Studies programs starting in September 2024: March 1, 2024.
Selection and Notification
- The selection committees nominate LExS recipients within six weeks of the deadline.
- Notifications are sent out at the end of November for February start programs and at the end of April for September start programs (ScholarshipsAds) (After School Africa) (Opportunities Pedia).

Leiden University Excellence Scholarships 2024 | ELIGIBILITY
To apply and qualify for LExS 2023/2024;
- Applicants must be Non-EU/EEA students enrolling in a Leiden University master’s degree programme starting September 2024
- Applicants must have previous degrees with excellent grades
Academic requirements
Students must have achieved excellent academic results in their previous study programme(s), which must be relevant to the Master’s programme for which they are applying.
As an indication, the student is amongst the top 10% of graduates in his/her previous study programme. Note that proof of ranking is not required – this information is purely to indicate the level of competitiveness
Scholarship Benefits
The scholarship will cover;
- € 10.000 of the tuition fee
- € 15.000 of the tuition fee
- Total tuition fee minus the statutory tuition fee (also referred to as home fee).

- If you apply for more than one study programme and wish to apply for a LExS for each, indicate this clearly in each application and upload a LExS motivation letter for each.
